They have been laying reliably all winter, without light. XL dark brown eggs that are particularly heavy.
Langshan is an amazing dual purpose bird originally from China. Large and docile, this is the breed from which Jersey Giants and Brahma were developed. Feather feet and shoulders like linebackers, they are considered top five among birds of the gourmet breeds, like Bresse and Houdan.
They start RELIABLY laying at 6 to 8 months. The males continue to grow to their 32 inch full height over three years. Males are amazing protectors of their hens, even taking on raccoons. The black feathers have a green iridescent, and the tail is a huge feather duster. Great Fair bird.
Milk chocolate Extra Large eggs: 60 to 65 grams(pictured, but actually darker). Some lay eggs with a plum or pink bloom, although I have not seen it in mine.
Breed two blues together and 25% of the chicks will be "splash." "Blue" is actually a dark grey with black penciling of the feathers.
Langshan flock: 4 Black rooster, 9 hens 4 black, 5 'blue'. in their own barn and run on the far side of the garden. . They don't free range. This is NOT a barn yard mix, but is pure breed Lanshan.
This is the only breed I have ever had where I keep EVERY rooster. They are amazing guardians of their hens, willing to take on a raccoon, which does not end well.
